Ex Arsenal man Remi Garde takes on the job of manager at Olympique Lyon

By Tony Attwood

Continuing my occasional series about ex Arsenal players in management here is the latest on Remi Garde’s team Lyon.   The club is lying second in the league after five games, having already beaten the early leaders Montpellier in August.

In the Champions League Lyon drew with Ajax in their opening game.  So its a fair start.

What we might also note however is that Eden Hazard scored twice as Lille beat St Etienne 3-1.  And Olympique Marseille have made a terrible start as the table above shows.  They were beaten in their last match in a 1-0 home defeat against Stade Rennes.  The champions of 2010, have drawn three and lost two games.

The other early news from Lyon is that French midfielder Gourcuff is reported to have been subject to a bid from Arsenal before going to to Lyon last August.

“I got a call on the penultimate day of the transfer window from Gilles Grimandi asking for a loan,” M Aulas, the president of Lyon has said.  Gourcuff was a key part of the Bordeaux side which won the Ligue 1 title in 2009, but has not done so well since moving to Lyon.
