January 1 and January 2. The answers to the quiz

The clubs however simply ignored it, and the league didn’t try and impose such a rule again, although Sir Henry Norris twice put forward the proposal at the League’s AGMs.

5.  On 1 January 1995 the News of the World ran the headline “After 98 games, two years, four months, two weeks, two days, one hour and 19 minutes….”   What?

6.   On 1 January 2001, Charlton Athletic did something unusual.  What?

c) Beat Arsenal for the first time in 44 years

7.  On 2 January 1886 Selby played Woolwich Utd.  So what?

a) It proved that Dial Square FC was not the first significant club in the Woolwich area.  There is only one town or village called Woolwich in England, and we do have a couple of references in historic documents to Woolwich Utd.  There is also a reference to Woolwich Union as a football club, but this is undoubtedly an error, as the Union was the workhouse.   Selby, being a long distance from Woolwich had a connection as it was also a ship building location, and so the likely explanation is that there was an association between workers in Woolwich and Selby that led to the match.

8.  On 2 January 1903 the Arsenal manager Harry Bradshaw faced trial in court.  What was it alleged that had he done wrong?
